Welfare and Inclusion Team

The Welfare and Inclusion team has been formed as part of the Excellence in Cities initiative. We work with any boys in school who have identified themselves, or have been identified by teachers or parents / carers, as having personal issues or concerns that may prevent them from getting the most out of school.

  • Enable the boys that we work with to recognise the potential they have, and the part they play, in making changes to achieve the best for themselves during their time at school.
  • Enable the boys to recognise the choices that they have, and that they make, both inside and outside school. The philosophy that underpins our work is one of self and mutual respect and caring. We believe that all boys are valued members of the school. They each have the ability to change, to develop and learn new skills, to grow and to achieve.
  • Support and help the boys in making changes and positive choices for themselves. How do we achieve this:
  • By talking to boys. We identify our target population in a variety of ways. A member of the team is available during lesson time to talk to boys who are out of lessons, explaining who we are and giving them the opportunity to work with us. We also ensure that we are available at breaks and lunchtimes.
  • Counselling and Mediation. All members of the team will talk to boys at their request and, where specific areas of expertise have been called for (bereavement, self-harm), external Counselling services are contacted and used. We also mediate when there are any conflict situations.
  • Groupwork. We have developed and gathered together material for courses in Anger Management, Raising Self-esteem and mentor training. We offer and present these courses to groups of boys across the school.
  • Work with families. In order to support boys we give a range of support and advice to Parents/Carers. This includes home visits at times which are convenient to the family, regular updates on boys' progress by phone call or letter and providing information on other agencies who can offer support outside school.
  • Links with outside agencies. We work with a variety of outside agencies in our efforts to ensure that the school can offer a continuum of provision and that boys have a range of opportunities and options. We are aiming to develop new links and contacts at every opportunity.

Partnership with Teaching Staff

The Welfare and Inclusion Team has developed in response to the specific needs of the school as identified in consultation with Senior Staff, Heads of Year and Subject Teaching Staff All of the work we do takes place with full regard to the School's policies on Equal Opportunities and Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Education and to the LEA Child Protection Procedures Welfare and Inclusion Team.
