BBC News School Report has been a successful part of our Key Stage 3 curriculum for the last 2 years. It gives the pupils an exciting opportunity to broadcast news that they are interested in. Throughout the project, pupils are able to explore radio, television and web-based media with the help of a specialist BBC mentor. It also offers a chance to have the final product aired on the BBC, as we were able to do in 2008.
BBC News School Report helps interest young people in the world around them, producing news for a real audience. We have found that taking part in School Report supports all sorts of learning: helping students develop their team-working skills; managing time effectively; working independently; improving communication skills; thinking critically.
Our 2008 School Report was such a success that two pupils were selected for a special trip to the BBC Manchester studio on Oxford Road. There they were able to film and edit their story in the BBC North West television studio used by Gordon Burns and Ranvir Singh. The finished news programme was shown on BBC North West Today and North West Tonight, viewed by around 600,000 people!
